To visit Latin America is to embrace sensation, colour and an infectious energy - it’s a destination you’re sure to fall in love with. So, where to begin your journey?
Cuba is our most popular destination in Latin America and it’s easy to see why. With the fall of Communism in the 90s this fascinating country started to emerge from an isolation that has preserved its spirit and given the world bewitching images of classic cars driving past crumbling Art Deco façades. With full diplomatic relations restored with the US in July 2015 and private business now flourishing, this is an interesting time to visit. The beaches are beautiful, you’ll stumble across restaurants serving sublime food, and be sure to eat the mouth-watering blend of coconut, sugar, orange, guava and pineapple called Cucurucho.
After Cuba, where next? Will it be Peru with awe-inspiring landscapes that encompass Amazonian rainforest, the lofty Andes and the dramatic Sechura desert? This country is most famous for the Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. Maybe you’d prefer the intoxicating blend of Latin American and European influences that is Argentina. This is the birthplace of tango and home of gauchos, where a passion for football rivals our own, and you’re likely to eat the best steaks you’ve ever tasted. What’s more its diverse countryside features ice fields, deserts and wetlands as well as some of the tallest peaks in the Andes.
Then there’s Chile - a staggering 4,300km long but in most parts just 175km wide. Sandwiched between the spine of the Andes and the Pacific, it offers a uniquely relaxed and refined take on the Latin American experience that demands to be experienced first-hand.
While any one of these destinations has more than its fair share of natural beauty, the biodiversity of Costa Rica is staggering, making this tiny republic an unmissable destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
Finally, you could visit Mexico and discover one of most vibrant and diverse countries in the region for yourself.
Coming from a culture where we tend to keep our distance from others, Latin America’s more convivial way of being can initially feel quite alien. But embrace it and you’ll return home transformed - forever resonating with the rhythms of the people and places that welcome you.
