Shedia – meaning “raft” in Greek – is a not-for-profit organisation that works to employ and empower people experiencing homelessness and social exclusion in Greece. They have a vast number of programs which includes a café-bar-restaurant in the historical centre of the Greek capital called Shedia Home. The café opened in May 2019 and provides valuable sustainable income for Shedia’s programs.
During our Classic Greece and Iconic Aegean Islands Cruise tour, you will visit the café, have a drink and enjoy an educational talk from one of Shedia’s guides, all of whom have struggled to find employment in Athens in recent years. Shedia’s guides give unparalleled insight into what life is like for individuals who are experiencing homelessness and/or social exclusion, and why Shedia’s programs were setup and how they are combatting the crisis.
On your visit make sure to have a look at the the art hanging from the ceiling, it represents the 43 individuals who now have homes thanks to their connection with Shedia.
Homelessness is a significant social issue in Greece, which was intensified by the Greek Financial Crisis which started in 2009. There is currently no accurate record of how many Athenians are experiencing homelessness, but the official unemployment rate hit almost 28% during the economic crisis that devastated the country over the last few years, with youth unemployment surpassing 50%.
Through Shedia’s programs, 150 people have been provided with the opportunity, through working, to earn an income to cover some of their basic needs, while 20 full-time employment positions have been created in the recently launched Shedia Home.
Experience the contrasts of Greece as you discover the ancient city of Athens, island hop in style through the Aegean and then relax on the Peloponnese peninsula.
